EUDR update: one year extension of the application dates

On the 2nd of Oct 24, the European Commission (EC) presented a proposal to extend the dates of entering into application of EUDR by 12 months.

This proposed extension will allow third countries, Member States, operators and traders to fully prepare their due diligence obligations to ensure that certain goods and products sold in or exported from the EU are deforestation-free. The extended timeline will also allow for further engagement with third countries, where relevant, several of which have expressed concerns related to the too short implementation time.

On October 16, the Council of the EU (representing EU Member States) agreed to the Commission’s proposal to extend the dates of application of the EUDR by one year.

Now we are only waiting for the decision of the European Parliament. If the Parliament also agree with the proposal for postponement, the following new dates of applicability of EUDR will be binding:

  • 30 December 2025, for large operators and traders
  • 30 June 2026, for micro- and small enterprises

It should be noted, however, that the proposal does not change the substance of the rules, but only postpones their date of application by 12 months.

Details about the proposed amendment of the Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 can be found here.
